How do I get to Skagway, Alaska?

Traveling to Alaska is on many traveler’s bucket lists but how to achieve your perfect visit can seem overwhelming. We have put together a list of ways to visit Skagway, Alaska by land, sea, and air so you can find the perfect option that best suits your travels.

• Cruise – With all major cruise lines calling on Skagway throughout the summer season, cruising to Skagway is typically the most popular and most economical way to visit the White Pass & Yukon Route. The majority of Alaska cruises begin in Seattle, Washington or Vancouver, British Columbia. Options range from 7-day round trip cruises to one-way sailings with overland options into the interior of Alaska. Both are wonderful options depending on how much time you have to experience the state and Skagway. Your day in port will allow you plenty of time to ride the rails. Most of our trips are catered toward the cruise guests visiting each day. Choose between half and full-day trips depending on how long your ship is docked in town.
• Ferry – If you want to travel like a local, a trip on the Alaska Marine Highway may be the best choice for you. The route from Bellingham, Washington to Skagway is approximately three days. There are overnight cabins available, but many choose to “camp” in the solarium on the top deck of the boat. This makes for a more affordable trip while putting your adventurous spirit to the test. The views are amazing and allows you to connect with visitors and locals through out the journey. Disembarking in Skagway and overnighting in town gives you the best opportunity for a train ride.
• Fly – If you do not have a full week to dedicate to a cruise, then flying to Skagway could be the best option for you.
  Via Alaska – Skagway is accessible through Juneau, Alaska. Major airlines like Alaska and Delta fly into the capital city throughout the summer. Once in Juneau, a short walk across the airport takes you to our commuter airline, Alaska Seaplanes. They have daily service to Skagway and makes for the most efficient way to get in and out of town. The train depot is only a 10-minute walk from the Skagway Airport.
  Via Yukon Territory – Skagway is also accessible via Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Yukon’s official airline is Air North. They operate daily service from Vancouver, BC to the capital of the territory. Other airline options include Air Canada and WestJet. From Whitehorse, Skagway is a 2-hour drive along an incredibly scenic stretch of the South Klondike Highway. White Pass hosts bus service from our downtown depot. Daily service to Carcross, YT or Fraser, BC with train connections from either point is a great way to enjoy a highway and rail tour on your way to Skagway. Rental cars are also available at the Whitehorse airport. Plan to overnight in Skagway because once the cruise ships leave town in the evening, the whole town is yours!
• Highway – Skagway is one of only a handful of communities in Southeast Alaska with road access. That means you can drive to see us from Canada or the lower 48 states. Travel along the famous Alaska Canadian Highway (also known as the ALCAN) is a trip of a lifetime and will not disappoint. The highway is paved so it is perfect for RV travel. Skagway has two RV parks that are open during the summer months making it easy to stay a few days in town to ride the train.
