WHITEHORSE – White Pass & Yukon Route signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with The Carcross/Tagish First Nation (CTFN) and the Government of Yukon  to work together towards the goal of developing the Carcross area as a tourism destination.

The ‘Destination Carcross’ MOU forges a partnership to increase tourism visitation and stimulate economic ventures in the Carcross region. The MOU also outlines activities that will contribute to increasing business opportunities in the Carcross region.

“ We have been working hard to shape a vision for a sustainable tourism economy in Carcross,” CTFN Khà Shâde Héni Wedge said. “CTFN sees this partnership as a key step towards creating permanent, year-round employment.”

WP&YR President Gary Danielson said, “We are extremely pleased to be a part of this strategic project. White Pass continues to invest significantly in rail upgrades to Carcross and we are proud to promote Carcross to our customers. Destination Carcross is an ambitious vision and the MOU gives us confidence to continue to grow our operations in the region.”

Through the MOU, the Destination Carcross partners have agreed to coordinate activities related to tourism development in the Carcross area. The partners will launch a pilot project to prepare for train charters in 2005, and will co-host a follow-up to last year’s Carcross Summit. CTFN, White Pass and the Yukon government are committed to working with the community to develop a shared vision and plans for Destination Carcross.

“We’re investing in the future of Carcross,” Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. “With the Yukon’s tourism numbers increasing and White Pass’ growing volume of passengers, it’s the ideal time to work with our partners and help turn Carcross into an attractive, sustainable destination.”
