How White Pass is doing its part for a greener Alaska

Adventure Green Certified Badge

White Pass & Yukon Route is pleased to announce its acceptance into the Adventure Green Alaska program. AGA is a voluntary certification program for tourism businesses that meet standards of economic, environmental, and social sustainability. Our railroad has been working hard towards making impactful changes to our operations from new locomotives, water bottle recycling and focusing on greener and more sustainable choices throughout all aspects of our business. We look forward to implementing our plans during the 2021 summer operating season.

The railroad uses low sulfur fuel and has recently completed a refurbishment of our historic locomotives in a move to increase fuel efficiency. In addition, we have purchased and will be receiving six new locomotives in 2020 that will far surpass fuel efficiency and emission standards of the current fleet. We have ensured that all newly acquired maintenance of way equipment remains Tier 4 compliant.

In an effort towards constant improvement we are always looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment in safe, sustainable, and appropriate ways. As such we are implementing a recycling program for our onboard recyclables for the 2021 season. We have also installed refillable water stations in our depot as well as promoting reusable water bottles to encourage their use.

These large investments and small steps toward a more sustainable and greener railroad will promote a healthier company throughout the regions we travel.
