Position Summary

White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad is seeking Rail Traffic Controllers (RTC) responsible for the safe and efficient on-track movements within the rail corridor.  Rail Traffic Controllers must possess outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills and must be able to manage multiple tasks with different priorities.  RTC’s operate from workstations within the Dispatch Center.

Rail Traffic Controllers issue authorities and permits to rail traffic, coordinate track work, and plan train meets/passes in a manner that minimizes delays, maximizes corridor through-put, and enables efficient track work windows.

RTC’s must have outstanding communication and comprehension skills with ability to issue clear and concise instructions in writing, by phone and over radios.

RTC’s must maintain constant vigilance and awareness of track movement and operational activity, operating rules, infrastructure changes, and unusual conditions.  RTC’s report to the Manager of Train Operations and assist in planning and problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and valid driver’s license. Candidates should have previous railway experience or relevant experience in other safety-sensitive work environments.
  • Must be computer literate and possess working familiarity of Microsoft Suite especially Word and Excel. Must be able to type 30 words per minute.
  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications-both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions) by radio and telephone.
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills) along with ability to analyze and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Basic math skills

Additional Information

  • Rail Traffic Controller may not work typical nine-to-five shifts. Schedules may be irregular, and candidates must be available to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • The majority of a Rail Traffic Controller’s work is performed at a desktop workstation. Much of it involves using computers and monitoring activity on computer displays. RTC’s make heavy use of radio communication technology to communicate with track maintenance and train crews.
  • Applicant must be currently authorized to work permanently in the United States and must be able to travel in Canada.
  • Available positions include seasonal hourly as well as permanent salary positions.
  • Applicant must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
